Value 9: Writing Arts students will have knowledge of the post-graduate options available to them in professions and/or graduate studies.
Before taking Professions in Writing arts, I was planning on blindly applying for Graduate school, because I thought that was the next step. But after taking this class, I’ve done research on different approaches to learning after getting my bachelor's degree and decided that a master’s degree is not the right next step for me. Instead of applying for graduate school, I’m now applying for internships. I also know much more about the career that I want to get into (publishing) and what I have to do in that field to get my desired position of an acquisitions editor.
Because I’ve taken a variety of writing classes, including a variety of journalism classes, several creative writing classes, grammar, publishing, english and editing, I’m prepared to take a job doing almost anything in writing. The Professions in Writing Arts class that I took has also widened my horizons with options in writing that I was unaware of. If some of my first choices for a career fell through, I could seek many other jobs and still do what I love.
I now know, if I wanted to be a college professor, I would either need an MFA or a doctorate. I would choose to get an MFA in creative writing if that’s what I decided I wanted to do later. I also minor in journalism and would be able to teach journalism classes in addition to composition, english or writing.
I have learned that I am not limited to writing and editing as a job with my degree. I also now know that my only option after those isn’t teaching. I could do freelancing, or I could be a book agent. Before Professions in Writing Arts I thought that I was very limited in what I could do, now I know there are many options that I have that I don’t need a MFA for.
